I went out today to take some pics around Zurich. Weather was depressing: rainy, cloudy, cold. But life turned to full color after entering a chocolate shop at Bahnhofstrasse. I'm sure you'll want to eat some chocolate after this! Click on the images to enlarge them.

Swiss chocolate / chocolate suizo

Basel
(English below)

Basel is also known as the Dreiländereck, or the three-countries corner. This is because the city is very close to the border between France, Germany and Switzerland. Located at the Rhine river, Basel is maybe touristically not so famous, but is indeed a very important city in Switzerland. Here are the headquarters of the Bank of International Settlements, known also as the "central bank of the central banks" of the world. Important companies, such as Novartis, are also lodged here.
This time, we went for the afternoon to Basel. Weather could have been better: there was a light rain and it was completely overcast. Still, I managed to take some pictures. Click on the images to view them on my Flickr site, where you can see a larger version. Hope you enjoy them.

Bern is the de facto capital of Switzerland. It is a strategic transit point, from which you can reach the impressive alpine destinations of the Bernese Alps (Bern Oberland), like Interlaken, a place that we visited just some weeks ago. However, the city has its own charm, the Old City being one of them. Built during the 12th century, the city still preserves its medieval spirit, and was admitted in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1983.

Jungfraujoch - Top of Europe

| From Suiza 2009 |

| From Suiza 2009 |

Jungfraujoch is a train station that has literally been built inside the hard rock of the Swiss Alps, some meters below the summit of the Jungfrau, at 3400 meters above sea level.
The trip to this place starts at the town of Interlaken, in the canton of Bern. From Interlaken Ost train station, trains to Jungfraujoch depart every 30 minutes from platform 2. To reach the Jungfraujoch, you can take one of two routes: 1) Interlaken Ost-Lauterbrunnen-Kleine Scheidegg- Jungfraujoch or 2) Interlaken Ost-Grindelwald-Kleine Scheidegg- Jungfraujoch. I recommend you to go up through one route and come down through the other. The trip itself is wonderful. The trip must be done with a rack train, and it’s quite expensive: about 160 Swiss francs, though there are discounts available if you have already purchased a card such as a GA, a day GA or a Swiss Pass. However, once you do the ride, you will understand why it is expensive.
You will have to change trains at the little town of Kleine Scheidegg. Kleine Scheidegg has a spectacular view of the three summits that have made this place famous worldwide: the Jungfrau, the Mönch and the Eiger. Regrettably, the angle of view of my lens is not wide enough to take a picture of the three peaks together. I owe you that one.

Once on the train that covers the last track of the trip (Kleine Scheidegg – Jungfraujoch), the trip turns into a technical challenge of epic proportions. The only way for this train to be able to operate during the whole year is by going inside the mountain, otherwise transiting would be impossible during winter months. And that is exactly what the Swiss did: the train circulates through a 7km-long tunnel drilled through the hard rock, with a steep inclination that, without a rack train, would be impossible to climb. During the trip up, the train stops two times inside the tunnel for 5 minutes, and during these stops you can get out of the train and see some spectacular views outside the mountain. More than an opportunity to take pictures, these stops are a chance for your body to adjust somewhat to the change in altitude, which starts to be noticeable after reaching 3000 meters.

The trip from Interlaken to the Jungfraujoch takes almost two and a half hours. Do not be scared if, after reaching the Jungfraujoch, you feel kind of dizzy or extremely tired. This trip makes you go from 568m to 3,471m in a very short time, and your body needs to adjust to the lack of oxygen at those altitudes. You will probably feel unusually tired and might experience some mild tachycardia.
Once at the Jungfraujoch (and with the tachycardia under control), there are a lot of things to do up there. Jungfraujoch offers a great view of the Aletsch glacier. The Aletsch was added to the UNESCO World Heritage Site list in 2001. This is the most important glacial zone in the Alps and the biggest in Eurasia. At its deepest point, it reaches almost 1km down. With a length of 23km, it is literally a huge ice lake at above 3000 meters. From the Jungfraujoch you will also enjoy a magnificent view of the Jungfrau and Mönch summits, as well as other smaller peaks that form the Swiss Alps.

At Jungfraujoch, you can also visit the Ice Palace, a big cavern dug into the ice where they have sculpted some figures on the ice. Visiting these ice halls is a must, they are indeed very beautiful.

I would like to take this opportunity to tell you that, regrettably, the Aletsch glacier is slowly melting, consequence of the global warming. Even though the Swiss take a lot of effort to be a very clean country, it is sad to see that the irresponsible actions of other high-polluting countries still are enough to deteriorate these Swiss treasures. I am not going to say which ones, I am sure you already know which are the most polluting countries in the world, don’t you? Global warming does not stay inside the borders of the polluting countries; it affects the whole planet. If this huge piece of ice melts, well, that would be really a catastrophe of indescribable consequences.

After living in Zurich for a little bit over a year, it is time to go. As some of you already know, as of tomorrow I will start a masters study in finance at the university of the Italian Switzerland in Lugano, with the objective of entering the doctorate in finance program soon. Since Lugano is a city three hours away from Zurich, I have been forced to move.
Today is my last day in Zurich, so I want to share with you a short video I prepared about this place. I have made the effort of showing you not only places that are touristically famous, but to show you some of the hidden treasures that one can find around the canton Zurich, and that few people know about.
My experience in Zurich was extraordinary. Selected for many years as the best city in the world to live, this is a place full of charm, art, architecture and an excellent place to do business. I expect to visit Zurich regularly, and for those that are thinking about coming to Europe on vacations, please, be sure to have Zurich on your itinerary. It is mandatory.

Tri de Nyon
(English below)
Saludos!

With more strength now to sit in front of a computer, I can tell you that the experience of participating on a Triathlon was amazing. Although I had expected a better finish time, the main objective was to finish it, that I have the satisfaction to be able to claim that result!
The swimming leg was challenging to me because I have about 2 months of swimming experience. Under the strict technical advice of my famous swimmer cousin Daniel, I went from swimming 50m on a pool, to a 1.5km open-water swimming competition. Without his help, this would have not been possible. Thanks Caco! It took me 49 minutes to finish.
The bike leg consisted of a 10km circuit to be rode four times along the countryside of canton Vaud, through beautiful plantations of sunflowers. With some uphill parts, I did not perform on the bike as good as usual, and it took me a disappointing time of 1 hour and 40 minutes to finish the biki leg.
Some say that the transition from bike to run is a nightmare. To me it was simple and easy: I just felt as if my feet were moving on air, as if there was no ground beneath them. The run leg consisted of 10km nearby the city of Nyon, with some uphill to go, which at this point in time, was really really rude! I finished with a time of 1 hour, 12 minutes.
And so, I share with you some pictures of my participation on this triathlon, hope you'll enjoy them!
