El Glacier Express es el tren rápido más lento del mundo, o por lo menos, así es como lo promueven los suizos. El Glacier Express es un tren turístico super confortable, que rueda a través de los más impresionantes alpes suizos, pueblos alpinos, y glaciares. El tren sale de St. Moritz o de Davos hacia Zermatt, en un impresionante viaje de siete horas y media a través de 291 puentes y 91 túneles, con el objetivo de experimentar el verdadero panorama alpino en el corazón de Suiza.

Tomamos este tren en Coira (Chur), partiendo en dirección hacia Zermatt. Durante el recorrido, el tren cruza por tres cantones: Grisones (Graubünden), Uri y Valais.

Grisones

Grisones es el cantón más grande de suiza, pero no es poblacionalmente el más denso, pues posee montañas en extremo. Grisones es la casa de dos de los más famosos pueblos del mundo: St. Moritz (famoso por ser el resort de esquí de los millonarios del mundo) y Davos (donde se celebra en Foro Económico Mundial todos los años). Además, es el único cantón donde el dialecto romanche es idioma oficial.

Durante el recorrido, cruzamos por los más impresionantes alpes que se puede uno imaginar: valles y montañas enterrados bajo la nieve, y paradisíacos pueblos que gozan de una tranquilidad extrema.

Uri

Entre Valais y Grisones se encuentra el cantón Uri, uno de los tres cantones que fundaron originalmente la confederación helvética en 1291. Los otros dos son Schwyz y Unterwalden. De Uri no se ve mucho, pues la pasada no es muy larga, pero es evidente que el cantón es dominado por los masizos alpinos: solamente el 56% de su superficie es productiva. Uno de los destinos turísticos más famosos de Uri es Andermatt, especialmente para los que buscan donde esquiar.

Valais

El cantón Valais (pronunciado valé en francés, Wallis en alemán) es el segundo cantón más gran de Suiza, después de Grisones. El viaje en el Glacier Express lo lleva a través de viñedos. Los vinos de valais son muy famosos en Suiza. Quizás ninguno de ustedes ha probado nunca el vino suizo, el cual es de excelente calidad. Quizás se preguntarán por qué el vino suizo no es famoso internacionalmente. La respuesta es simple: el vino es tan bueno, que los suizos se lo toman todo, así que no queda nada para exportar. En mi casa no falta nunca una botella de buen vino rojo Tesinés!

Algunos habrán escuchado del super famoso y ultra caro Hôtel Ritz en París, Francia. El hotel fue fundado en 1898 por César Ritz, conocido en aquellos tiempos como el "rey de los hoteleros". Ritz nació en Niederwald, una municipalidad en el distrito de Goms, parte del cantón Valais. El tren pasa por espectaculares paisajes de Goms también.

El viaje termina en Zermatt, un pueblo 100% turístico cerca de la frontera con Italia. Zermatt es famoso por un aspecto en particular: el pueblo es dominado por el impresionante Cervino (Matterhorn), un pico de 4,478 metros de altura, que forma parte de los Alpes Valesanos. Esta montaña es considerada un ícono suizo, y con toda razón.

Al llegar a Zermatt, tomamos el tren Gornergratbahn hacie Gornergrat. Este no es un tren cualquiera: el camino es tan empinado, que el viaje se realiza en un tren de cremallera, ya que debido a la inclinación, la fricción entre las ruedas convencionales de un tren y los rieles es muy escasa. Desde Gornergrat se obtiene una vista inigualable del Cervino:

La paz y el silencio en Gornergrat, acompañados de la vista panorámica que se tiene del Cervino y del resto de los alpes valesanos hacen que esta sea una visita obligatoria.

Para aquellos que estén pensando en hacer turismo en Suiza, este ha sido uno de los viajes más espectaculares que he hecho en este país, el Glacier Express es visita mandatoria. Tomen un tren de Zúrich a Coira o a Zermatt (el tren parte desde ambos pueblos en la mañana) y hagan el viaje. Si están en Zermatt, tomen el tren a Gornergrat. Si lo hacen, estoy seguro que me lo van a agradecer!

The Glacier Express is the world's slowest express train, or at least that is how the Swiss promote it. Glacier Express is an ultra-comfortable touristic train that rolls through the most spectacular Swiss alps, alpine towns and glaciers. The train departs from St. Moritz or Davos towards Zermatt, on an impressive trip across 291 bridges and 91 tunnels, with the objective of experiencing the real alpine panoramas at the heart of Switzerland.

We took this train in Chur. During the entire trip, the train goes through three Cantons: Graubünden, Uri and Valais.

Graubünden

Graubünden is the biggest canton in Switzerland, but it is not densely populated, since it possess a massive amount of mountains. Graubünden is the home of two of the most famous towns in the world: St. Moritz (famous for being the ski resort of the super-rich of the world) and Davos (home of the World Economic Forum). Besides, it is the only canton where Romansh is an official language.

The scenic views along Graubünden are simply impressive. Valleys and astonishing mountains buried in snow, and small towns where peace and tranquility seem to be eternal.

Uri

Between Valais and Graubünden one finds Kanton Uri, one of the three cantons that originally founded the Helvetic Confederation in 1291. The other two are Schwyz and Unterwalden. One does not see much of Uri, since the trip across it is fairly short, but one thing is clear: the canton is dominated by the massive alps: 56% of the canton is unproductive soil. One of its most famous tourism destinations is Andermatt, specially for those looking where to ski.

Valais

Canton Valais (Wallis in German) is the second largest canton of Switzerland, after Graubünden. The trip on the Glacier Express takes you through vineyards. Valais wines are very famous in Switzerland. Maybe none of you have ever tried Swiss wine before. It is extremely good. If it is so good, then why isn't it internationally famous? The reason is very simple: Swiss wine is so good, that the Swiss drink it all; therefore, there is nothing left to export! In my house, there is always a bottle of great red wine from Ticino :-)

Maybe some of you may have heard about the very famous and ultra-expensive Hôtel Ritz in Paris, France. The hotel was founded in 1898 by César Ritz, known on those days as "the king of hoteliers". Ritz was born in Niederwald, one of the municipalities of the Goms district, part of canton Valais. The train goes across some parts of Goms too.

The trip on the Glacier Express ends in Zermatt, a 100% tourism-oriented town near the border with Italy. Zermatt is extremely famous for one thing in particular: the town is dominated by the impressive Matterhorn, a 4,478 meter-high mountain that belongs to the Pennine Alps. This peak is absolutely iconic of Switzerland.

Once we got to Zermatt, we took the Gornergratbahn train to Gornergrat. This is not a common train. Since the road is so steep, the train is actually a rack railway, since on such steep roads, the friction between the normal train wheels and the rails is too low and it just doesn't work. From Gornergrat you get an outstanding view of Matterhorn:

The peace and calmness at Gornergrat, along with the panoramic view of the Pennine alps and the Matterhorn, make this a mandatory visit.

For those thinking of doing a trip to Switzerland, I must tell you that this is one of the most spectacular trips I've done since I've been here in this country, the Glacier Express is certainly a mandatory visit for those coming here. Take a train from Zurich to Chur or to Zermatt (the train departs from both towns in the morning) and do this trip. If you are in Zermatt, be sure to take the Gornergrat train to Gornergrat and enjoy the view of the Matterhorn. If you do this, I'm sure you will be thanking me later!
