Today was the longest traning session of the trainings plan: 30km at 6:45min/km, with some ascents along the way. For this route, I departed from Rankweil, in Austria, and proceeded towards Bregenz, a city that lies along the shores of Bodensee river. Bregenz is very near the border with Germany's Baviera. As of today, the training plan starts reducing mileage. The marathon is only 2 weeks ahead! As usual, I upload a map of the journey and some photos as well.
I ran the half-marathon in 2 hours and 9 minutes, although I am still waiting for the official times, which have not been released yet. With this, I finalize my last training competition before Zurich's marathon, which is on April 26. Never had I run so fast in my whole life (6min/km), but because the targeted time was 2 hours 10 minutes, I had to work hard today. At the end of the competition, I discovered they were giving beer for free, just after the finish line! It happens to be that a local brewery company, Fohrenburger, sponsored this half-marathon, so I grabbed 2 cups of beer and drank them without interruption... never had a beer been so tasty in my life!
Una breve carrerita para calentar. 6km @ 6:45min/km.
Just a quick run to warm up for tomorrow, 6km @ 6:45min/km. Tomorrow I'm running a half-marathon in Bludenz, Austria. According to my training plan, I must run the 21.1km of the half-marathon in no more than 2 hours 10 minutes. The last time I ran a HM was in October, when I did 2 hours 32 minutes. Let's see if I can take down the finish time, I'll let you know tomorrow.
Today, I decided to do an international run. Since I had to run 28km, I traced a route between Austria and Liechtenstein. I departed from Rankweil towards Nofels, where I crossed the border with the tiny principality. Then I reached Ruggell, where I turned south parallel to the Rhine river. Then I turned East, going to Eschen, after which I turned north to Mauren, where I crossed the border again and came back to Austria. It was an incredible journey. Not only I proved that my knee is working fine again, but I got to see wonderful places and, for the first time in my life, ran 30km.
Just a small, short 6km run at 6:45min/km. Tomorrow I have a big one scheduled, 28km, where I expect to confirm if my left knee is finally recovered or not...
My sincere condolences to the Ulloa Ledezma family. Ms. Ligia Ledezma, mother of one personal friend of mine, regrettably passed away.
The Glacier Express is the world's slowest express train, or at least that is how the Swiss promote it. Glacier Express is an ultra-comfortable touristic train that rolls through the most spectacular Swiss alps, alpine towns and glaciers. The train departs from St. Moritz or Davos towards Zermatt, on an impressive trip across 291 bridges and 91 tunnels, with the objective of experiencing the real alpine panoramas at the heart of Switzerland.
We took this train in Chur. During the entire trip, the train goes through three Cantons: Graubünden, Uri and Valais.
Graubünden is the biggest canton in Switzerland, but it is not densely populated, since it possess a massive amount of mountains. Graubünden is the home of two of the most famous towns in the world: St. Moritz (famous for being the ski resort of the super-rich of the world) and Davos (home of the World Economic Forum). Besides, it is the only canton where Romansh is an official language.
The scenic views along Graubünden are simply impressive. Valleys and astonishing mountains buried in snow, and small towns where peace and tranquility seem to be eternal.
Between Valais and Graubünden one finds Kanton Uri, one of the three cantons that originally founded the Helvetic Confederation in 1291. The other two are Schwyz and Unterwalden. One does not see much of Uri, since the trip across it is fairly short, but one thing is clear: the canton is dominated by the massive alps: 56% of the canton is unproductive soil. One of its most famous tourism destinations is Andermatt, specially for those looking where to ski.
Canton Valais (Wallis in German) is the second largest canton of Switzerland, after Graubünden. The trip on the Glacier Express takes you through vineyards. Valais wines are very famous in Switzerland. Maybe none of you have ever tried Swiss wine before. It is extremely good. If it is so good, then why isn't it internationally famous? The reason is very simple: Swiss wine is so good, that the Swiss drink it all; therefore, there is nothing left to export! In my house, there is always a bottle of great red wine from Ticino :-)
Maybe some of you may have heard about the very famous and ultra-expensive Hôtel Ritz in Paris, France. The hotel was founded in 1898 by César Ritz, known on those days as "the king of hoteliers". Ritz was born in Niederwald, one of the municipalities of the Goms district, part of canton Valais. The train goes across some parts of Goms too.
The trip on the Glacier Express ends in Zermatt, a 100% tourism-oriented town near the border with Italy. Zermatt is extremely famous for one thing in particular: the town is dominated by the impressive Matterhorn, a 4,478 meter-high mountain that belongs to the Pennine Alps. This peak is absolutely iconic of Switzerland.
Once we got to Zermatt, we took the Gornergratbahn train to Gornergrat. This is not a common train. Since the road is so steep, the train is actually a rack railway, since on such steep roads, the friction between the normal train wheels and the rails is too low and it just doesn't work. From Gornergrat you get an outstanding view of Matterhorn:
For those thinking of doing a trip to Switzerland, I must tell you that this is one of the most spectacular trips I've done since I've been here in this country, the Glacier Express is certainly a mandatory visit for those coming here. Take a train from Zurich to Chur or to Zermatt (the train departs from both towns in the morning) and do this trip. If you are in Zermatt, be sure to take the Gornergrat train to Gornergrat and enjoy the view of the Matterhorn. If you do this, I'm sure you will be thanking me later!
Winter is coming to an end and spring will soon appear here in Europe. Temperatures are going much higher now, and some flowers are already starting to blossom. During the 2008-2009 winter, I took along some pictures and videos that I want to share with you. Check out this video I uploaded to YouTube, and be sure to watch it in High Definition!
(HD).
I uploaded this Youtube video. Check it out in HD please!
Those that know me well enough know that I am passionate about cars. So of course I didn't miss the chance to take the train and go to the Geneva Motor Show. The Geneva Motor Show (Salon de l'auto) is an event held since 1905. It is one of the world's most important auto shows, and you can say that the most important models in the history of the auto industry have been introduced here in Geneva.
Since here in Switzerland (and Geneva, specially), there is no lack of rich and super-rich, the most luxurious and expensive autos are also represented here. Mercedes-Benz, Lamborghini, Ferrari, prototypes of Italian designers like Zagato and Guigiaro, Rolls Royce, Bentley, Maseratti, even the 1.4 million euros Bugatti Veyron 16.4 are here.
Literally, all the world's famous car manufacturers are obliged to have a stand at this expo. From the japanese like Toyota, Honda, Suzuki, etc), the bankrupted Americans (Chrysler, GM, Ford), the Europeans (VW, BMW, Mercedes, Fiat, etc), the ultra-luxurious cars, the supersports, to the classical Italian design houses.
For those curious, the most expensive car is the Bugatti Veyron 16.4. Equipped with a 16-cylinder, quad-turbo, 1000HP engine, achieves a little bit more than 400km/h. Want one? If you can take EUR 1.4 million out of your bank account, you can take one home...
The Geneva Motor Show is a great place to see excellent autos with impressive design and new technology. Every year, manufacturers present new models that are more efficient, and some try really hard to become environmentally friendly by introducing hybrids, smaller engines, electrical cars and even hydrogen-powered engines.
The motor show is held in March, so if you are planning to come to the west part of Switzerland in the near future, be sure to plan it for March and enjoy this great show!
Some might ask me: "If you had all the money you wanted, which car would you buy?" Well, ladies and gentlemen, here is the answer:
@ 6:45min/h.
@6:45min/h. Just a quick run to finish the week. I should do a milestone tomorrow, that is, to run 10km in less than an hour. But I'm gonna skip that session, because today I got a very weird pain in the left knee, so I'll give it a rest. The last time I ran 10km, I managed a time of 59 minutes...
I ran today under snowy conditions, but I don't care anymore whether it's raining or snowing... 4km warm-up, then 3 x 1000m at 5:40min/km, 4 minutes of slow jogging between intervals, and then 1.5km to close up the 10k.
Weather in Latvia was miserable during my stay there, and so I didn't run. Rain/snow/wind/rain/snow/wind, and so on for the whole weekend. Since the long runs MUST NEVER be skipped, I ran today 22km in Zürich.
And now I got my first obstacle towards the marathon. Once I got home, I discovered that one of my toenails what blue, and now it's starting to hurt. Curiously, I didn't feel anything during the run. Anyway, I might have to skip some days of training...
Again, I was sent to Riga, to take the course "Security Investment Analysis". Actually, I'm in Riga since Thursday, and I will return back to Zurich today in the evening. I'm uploading for you a pic I took right after takeoff from Zurich.
Hoy hice intervalos.
Tiempo: 1:15 Distancia: 10km Calorias: 1203
Today I did intervals. Intervals are a very hard training component, because there are parts where you have to run at maximum speed. The purpose of interval training is to raise the speed at which you can run the marathon.
In this case, I did 3km of warm-up, and then 3 x 1000m at 5min/km, with 400m of rest between each interval. After the 3x1000m, I ran to finish the 10km for this session.
Today's session was one of the most challenging I've had. It snowed and snowed to no end, since the very beginning. It got to the point where snow gets inside everything, especially the sneakers. I came back home covered in snow and totally wet. But if the training plan says one must run, I must do, no matter what!
The problem gets worse because the sidewalks get totally covered by snow, and so traction is not good, and the speed is considerably reduced. But the important part at this point of the plan is to accumulate kilometers by running slowly, since that's the way you train your body to obtain energy from fat and not from carbohydrates, a critically ability to run a marathon successfully.
Tiempo / Time: 3:15 Distancia / Distance: 22km Calorías / Calories: 2932.
The Zurich Marathon is the reason why my winter biking season is over. Starting tomorrow I'll be training for the marathon, to be held on April 26. I'm already registered, so there's no turning back now! A marathon consists in running for 42 kilometers, and I expect to finish it in about four hours. The training program lasts 10 weeks, during which I must accumulate a total of 642 kilometers.
Tiempo total: 46 horas, 32 minutos. Calorías: 33,868. Kilómetros: 565.3. Velocidad máxima: 70.3 km/h.
Winter mountain biking season is officially over! I won't ride my bike anymore until after April 26. Why? I'll tell you tomorrow :-)
In summary, it was extremely interesting to ride my bike during these winter months. It was a time loaded with new experiences. First, it was the first time that I practiced sports at temperatures below the freezing point. At times it got even below -15C. Secondly, it was impressive for me to return home with the bike full of snow and my clothing covered with frost. And lastly, even though sometimes I rode through roads that were literally pure ice, I never fell (though many times the bike moved awfully and skid horribly!) With my mountain bike I got to discover spectacular places in Switzerland, and I enjoyed impressive winter scenes, as you could see from the pictures I posted.
During the last days we've got nothing more than snow. But today it was a blessing, a perfect day to go outside and do some sport: sky almost cloudless, totally sunny day, and a great -5C temperature to warm things a little bit up. I decided to go around Greifensee with my bike, which is one of my favorite routes. I'm uploading some pictures I took along the way.
To celebrate my birthday, we went 2 nights to a hotel at the border between Switzerland and Italy, the Swiss Diamond Hotel, located 15 minutes away from Lugano by car, in canton Ticino. Ticino is the canton known as the Italian Switzerland (la svizzera italiana), that is, the part of Switzerland where the oficial language is Italian. Personally, I believe this is one of Swtizerland's most impressive regions, you'll see the pictures.
The Swiss Diamond Hotel is a 5-star hotel, and right in front of it is the lake of Lugano (Lago di Lugano). The border between Switzerland and Italy lies at the middle of the lake, that is, the other side of the lake is already Italy. Since since months are very bad for hotels in this region, one can find very attractive deals and good prices. The Swiss Diamond Hotel is a Wellness Spa, with massage rooms, jacuzzis, sauna, steam bath and a traditional turkish bath, among other features.
The day of my birthday, we went to Lugano. Weather was spectacular, which is rare in winter. The sky was almost totally cloudless and there was a lot of sun. If it wasn't for the temperature, it would have been a perfect summer day. Lugano is Swizerland's third most important financial center, after Zurich and Geneva. The banking sector is comprised mostly of private banks, which are the institutions that manage the assets of the rich. On one bank, for example, the minimum deposit required to have an account opened is 2 million swiss francs (around USD 2 million), although the minimum varies from bank to bank. So it is not rare to see impressive cars rolling through the streets of Lugano, some high-class Mercedes-Benz, Range Rover's, Maseratti's, Bentley's and many more.
It was a great way to spend my birthday, and I expect to return to this place and this same hotel next year, if they repeat the special offer, of course :-)
This route was programmed automatically by the GPS. The problem that GPS still have, is that they don't actually know where they send you through. In this case, the GPS sent me across the middle of a cemetery in the city of Riga... But I don't complain, the run was good.
Regrettably, I missed the Super Bowl this year, which I always watched at the Hotel M. However, I got to see the commercials, and this year I give my "thumbs up" to Coca-Cola, who always manages to produce spectacular commercials!
Again, I went skiing to Laterns in Austria. The thing is, it is starting to become an addiction: the more I go skiing, the more I want to do it again. But winter will be soon over (as well as my money!), so we have to take advantage of February and March, before the snow melts.
There was an accident this day. A 12-year old girl crashed with somebody else and required immediate medical evacuation. Fortunately, the "yellow angels" of ÖAMTC operate a network of medivac helicopters. These Austrian pilots never cease to amaze me: they land in the middle on the mountains, go even through fog, even with trees very close by. They fly with such an ability, as if it were riding a bicycle!
FYI, I'm going to Riga, Latvia, this Thursday, so I'll keep you posted.
