(English below)

- Tiempo total: 05:09:19.

With this time I finished my first marathon. It is not an impressive time, but enough to allow me to put one marathon under my belt.

I decided, some months ago, to do a marathon out of respect for this event and the people that participate in them. "Run a mile if you want to run, run a marathon if you want a life-changing experience" said once Emil Zapotek, a marathonist that won three gold medals in long-distance competitions at the 1952 Helsinki olympics. And all the respect that being a marathonist has, is well deserved!

To be able to run 42.195km, you need more than a well-trained body. You need discipline, and an unbreakable spirit and mind. A marathon is not only a tremendous physical challenge, but it is a mental game too, where you compete against yourself. To me, kilometers from 35 to 39 were particularly hard. During these 4km, thousands of reasons passed through my mind that tried to convince me to stop and quit. It's a little internal voice that gains strength as kilometers go by who tries to stop the effort and convince you to go home. In German, there's a very good word for this (Schweinehund, which literally means pig-dog. This pig-dog was very strong after kilometer 35, and it took me 4km to send him to HELL (sorry, I cannot transcribe here where I literally told him :-) But after kilometer 40, my body gained strength out of nowhere, to the point that the last 2km I ran at a pace of 5:00min/km. These legs still had some power to give!

Many thanks to my parents, to all the people that wrote me words of support, to the committee that organized the marathon for an impressive work, to Herbert Steffny, who wrote the training plan I followed (and the wonderful book "Perfektes Marathon Training", without which this success would have probably not been possible), to the thousands of people along the road who gave me their support, to Susanne, Michael and Sira, who waited for me at the finish line, and of course, to Ernst, who invited me to run the Zurich Marathon.

Curious about some statistics?

- Total time: 05:09:19.
- Distance: 42,195 meters (26.1 miles).
- Average pace: 7:35min/km.
- Calories: 4,862.
- Lost weight during the marathon: 1kg.

A video will follow this post later. Please, stay tuned.

(English below)

No, it's not a postal code. It's the number with which I'll make my debut tomorrow at the Zurich marathon. Beginning at 08.30 tomorrow Sunday, 5,600 runners will engage the task of running along 42.195km through the city of Zurich. This year, the marathon is particularly interesting because it will go through the Uetlibergtunnel, a brand-new tunnel built outside the city, and that will open to vehicle transit on Monday. So for as long as 8km, the weather doesn't matter, it will protect us against the rays of the sun or the wrath of the rain!

As I told you before on another post, I come to the marathon very well prepared. Although I've been running for the last five years, it was not until July 2008 that I started gathering statistics. And since I am a fan of statistical information, I'm gonna share some more with you :-)

As of July 23, 2007, I have:

- 95 hours, 07 minutes of jogging and 48 hours, 43 minutes of cycling time.
- 100 sessions of jogging.
- 76,802 burned calories while jogging and 35,582 burned while cycling.
- 679km jogging and 604km on my bike.

Oh, and by the way, during the 10-week marathon training program, I've lost 4kg. Not bad, those are 4 kilos less of ballast to drag along 42 kilometers.

I'll let you know tomorrow what happened. Stay tuned!

Carboloading

Carboloading is a common practice among endurance athletes. It consists of a special diet that must be followed during the last days before the sport event. When carboloading, one must eat very very little fat, drink a lot of water, eat at least five times per day, and eat mostly carbohydrates. As you can see, this part of the training plan is sooo cool: I've been eating pastas like crazy, and enjoying it very much!

MTB, 26km

Just a short 26-km bike ride, to start loosening up the legs, in preparation for Sunday's marathon. The advantage of cross-training with the bicycle is that one does not put pressure on the legs, especially the knees.

Quick run, 6km

Short run of 6km @ 6:45min/km. With this, week 9 of the training plan is over. The marathon is in exactly one week. As of now, the plan focuses of very light and short runs, a pasta-based diet, and a lot of rest (this part I like!).

I have added to the blog a counter with the exact remaining time left for the marathon.

30km, Rankweil - Bregenz

From Bike Pictures

(English below)

Today was the longest traning session of the trainings plan: 30km at 6:45min/km, with some ascents along the way. For this route, I departed from Rankweil, in Austria, and proceeded towards Bregenz, a city that lies along the shores of Bodensee river. Bregenz is very near the border with Germany's Baviera. As of today, the training plan starts reducing mileage. The marathon is only 2 weeks ahead! As usual, I upload a map of the journey and some photos as well.

Fohrenburger Half-marathon 2009

From Fohrenburger Halbmarathon

I ran the half-marathon in 2 hours and 9 minutes, although I am still waiting for the official times, which have not been released yet. With this, I finalize my last training competition before Zurich's marathon, which is on April 26. Never had I run so fast in my whole life (6min/km), but because the targeted time was 2 hours 10 minutes, I had to work hard today. At the end of the competition, I discovered they were giving beer for free, just after the finish line! It happens to be that a local brewery company, Fohrenburger, sponsored this half-marathon, so I grabbed 2 cups of beer and drank them without interruption... never had a beer been so tasty in my life!

Quick run, 6km

Una breve carrerita para calentar. 6km @ 6:45min/km.

Just a quick run to warm up for tomorrow, 6km @ 6:45min/km. Tomorrow I'm running a half-marathon in Bludenz, Austria. According to my training plan, I must run the 21.1km of the half-marathon in no more than 2 hours 10 minutes. The last time I ran a HM was in October, when I did 2 hours 32 minutes. Let's see if I can take down the finish time, I'll let you know tomorrow.

30km Long-run: Austria and Liechtenstein

Today, I decided to do an international run. Since I had to run 28km, I traced a route between Austria and Liechtenstein. I departed from Rankweil towards Nofels, where I crossed the border with the tiny principality. Then I reached Ruggell, where I turned south parallel to the Rhine river. Then I turned East, going to Eschen, after which I turned north to Mauren, where I crossed the border again and came back to Austria. It was an incredible journey. Not only I proved that my knee is working fine again, but I got to see wonderful places and, for the first time in my life, ran 30km.

Quick run, 6km

This time, I started the run from Zurich downtown towards Küsnacht, running besides the lake.

Quickrun, 6km

@ 6:45min/h.

@6:45min/h. Just a quick run to finish the week. I should do a milestone tomorrow, that is, to run 10km in less than an hour. But I'm gonna skip that session, because today I got a very weird pain in the left knee, so I'll give it a rest. The last time I ran 10km, I managed a time of 59 minutes...

10km, interval training

I ran today under snowy conditions, but I don't care anymore whether it's raining or snowing... 4km warm-up, then 3 x 1000m at 5:40min/km, 4 minutes of slow jogging between intervals, and then 1.5km to close up the 10k.

Long run, 22km

Weather in Latvia was miserable during my stay there, and so I didn't run. Rain/snow/wind/rain/snow/wind, and so on for the whole weekend. Since the long runs MUST NEVER be skipped, I ran today 22km in Zürich.

And now I got my first obstacle towards the marathon. Once I got home, I discovered that one of my toenails what blue, and now it's starting to hurt. Curiously, I didn't feel anything during the run. Anyway, I might have to skip some days of training...
