30km Long-run: Austria and Liechtenstein

Hoy decidí echarme una carrera internacional. Puesto que debía correr 28km, hice una ruta entre Austria y Liechtenstein. Salí de Rankweil hacia Nofels, donde crucé la frontera con el pequeño principado en dirección a Ruggell. De Ruggell tomé hacia el sur bordeando el río Rin, luego al este hacia Eschen. De Eschen doblé hacia el norte para llegar a Mauren, donde crucé la frontera para regresar a Austria. Fue una ruta excelente, comprobé que ya estoy bien de la rodilla, y por primera vez me eché 30km de una sola corrida.

Today, I decided to do an international run. Since I had to run 28km, I traced a route between Austria and Liechtenstein. I departed from Rankweil towards Nofels, where I crossed the border with the tiny principality. Then I reached Ruggell, where I turned south parallel to the Rhine river. Then I turned East, going to Eschen, after which I turned north to Mauren, where I crossed the border again and came back to Austria. It was an incredible journey. Not only I proved that my knee is working fine again, but I got to see wonderful places and, for the first time in my life, ran 30km.

Quick run, 6km

El Glacier Express es el tren rápido más lento del mundo, o por lo menos, así es como lo promueven los suizos. El Glacier Express es un tren turístico super confortable, que rueda a través de los más impresionantes alpes suizos, pueblos alpinos, y glaciares. El tren sale de St. Moritz o de Davos hacia Zermatt, en un impresionante viaje de siete horas y media a través de 291 puentes y 91 túneles, con el objetivo de experimentar el verdadero panorama alpino en el corazón de Suiza.

Tomamos este tren en Coira (Chur), partiendo en dirección hacia Zermatt. Durante el recorrido, el tren cruza por tres cantones: Grisones (Graubünden), Uri y Valais.

Grisones

Grisones es el cantón más grande de suiza, pero no es poblacionalmente el más denso, pues posee montañas en extremo. Grisones es la casa de dos de los más famosos pueblos del mundo: St. Moritz (famoso por ser el resort de esquí de los millonarios del mundo) y Davos (donde se celebra en Foro Económico Mundial todos los años). Además, es el único cantón donde el dialecto romanche es idioma oficial.

Durante el recorrido, cruzamos por los más impresionantes alpes que se puede uno imaginar: valles y montañas enterrados bajo la nieve, y paradisíacos pueblos que gozan de una tranquilidad extrema.

Uri

Entre Valais y Grisones se encuentra el cantón Uri, uno de los tres cantones que fundaron originalmente la confederación helvética en 1291. Los otros dos son Schwyz y Unterwalden. De Uri no se ve mucho, pues la pasada no es muy larga, pero es evidente que el cantón es dominado por los masizos alpinos: solamente el 56% de su superficie es productiva. Uno de los destinos turísticos más famosos de Uri es Andermatt, especialmente para los que buscan donde esquiar.

Valais

El cantón Valais (pronunciado valé en francés, Wallis en alemán) es el segundo cantón más gran de Suiza, después de Grisones. El viaje en el Glacier Express lo lleva a través de viñedos. Los vinos de valais son muy famosos en Suiza. Quizás ninguno de ustedes ha probado nunca el vino suizo, el cual es de excelente calidad. Quizás se preguntarán por qué el vino suizo no es famoso internacionalmente. La respuesta es simple: el vino es tan bueno, que los suizos se lo toman todo, así que no queda nada para exportar. En mi casa no falta nunca una botella de buen vino rojo Tesinés!

Algunos habrán escuchado del super famoso y ultra caro Hôtel Ritz en París, Francia. El hotel fue fundado en 1898 por César Ritz, conocido en aquellos tiempos como el "rey de los hoteleros". Ritz nació en Niederwald, una municipalidad en el distrito de Goms, parte del cantón Valais. El tren pasa por espectaculares paisajes de Goms también.

El viaje termina en Zermatt, un pueblo 100% turístico cerca de la frontera con Italia. Zermatt es famoso por un aspecto en particular: el pueblo es dominado por el impresionante Cervino (Matterhorn), un pico de 4,478 metros de altura, que forma parte de los Alpes Valesanos. Esta montaña es considerada un ícono suizo, y con toda razón.

Al llegar a Zermatt, tomamos el tren Gornergratbahn hacie Gornergrat. Este no es un tren cualquiera: el camino es tan empinado, que el viaje se realiza en un tren de cremallera, ya que debido a la inclinación, la fricción entre las ruedas convencionales de un tren y los rieles es muy escasa. Desde Gornergrat se obtiene una vista inigualable del Cervino:

Para aquellos que estén pensando en hacer turismo en Suiza, este ha sido uno de los viajes más espectaculares que he hecho en este país, el Glacier Express es visita mandatoria. Tomen un tren de Zúrich a Coira o a Zermatt (el tren parte desde ambos pueblos en la mañana) y hagan el viaje. Si están en Zermatt, tomen el tren a Gornergrat. Si lo hacen, estoy seguro que me lo van a agradecer!

The Glacier Express is the world's slowest express train, or at least that is how the Swiss promote it. Glacier Express is an ultra-comfortable touristic train that rolls through the most spectacular Swiss alps, alpine towns and glaciers. The train departs from St. Moritz or Davos towards Zermatt, on an impressive trip across 291 bridges and 91 tunnels, with the objective of experiencing the real alpine panoramas at the heart of Switzerland.

We took this train in Chur. During the entire trip, the train goes through three Cantons: Graubünden, Uri and Valais.

Graubünden

Graubünden is the biggest canton in Switzerland, but it is not densely populated, since it possess a massive amount of mountains. Graubünden is the home of two of the most famous towns in the world: St. Moritz (famous for being the ski resort of the super-rich of the world) and Davos (home of the World Economic Forum). Besides, it is the only canton where Romansh is an official language.

The scenic views along Graubünden are simply impressive. Valleys and astonishing mountains buried in snow, and small towns where peace and tranquility seem to be eternal.

Uri

Between Valais and Graubünden one finds Kanton Uri, one of the three cantons that originally founded the Helvetic Confederation in 1291. The other two are Schwyz and Unterwalden. One does not see much of Uri, since the trip across it is fairly short, but one thing is clear: the canton is dominated by the massive alps: 56% of the canton is unproductive soil. One of its most famous tourism destinations is Andermatt, specially for those looking where to ski.

Valais

Canton Valais (Wallis in German) is the second largest canton of Switzerland, after Graubünden. The trip on the Glacier Express takes you through vineyards. Valais wines are very famous in Switzerland. Maybe none of you have ever tried Swiss wine before. It is extremely good. If it is so good, then why isn't it internationally famous? The reason is very simple: Swiss wine is so good, that the Swiss drink it all; therefore, there is nothing left to export! In my house, there is always a bottle of great red wine from Ticino :-)

Maybe some of you may have heard about the very famous and ultra-expensive Hôtel Ritz in Paris, France. The hotel was founded in 1898 by César Ritz, known on those days as "the king of hoteliers". Ritz was born in Niederwald, one of the municipalities of the Goms district, part of canton Valais. The train goes across some parts of Goms too.

The trip on the Glacier Express ends in Zermatt, a 100% tourism-oriented town near the border with Italy. Zermatt is extremely famous for one thing in particular: the town is dominated by the impressive Matterhorn, a 4,478 meter-high mountain that belongs to the Pennine Alps. This peak is absolutely iconic of Switzerland.

Once we got to Zermatt, we took the Gornergratbahn train to Gornergrat. This is not a common train. Since the road is so steep, the train is actually a rack railway, since on such steep roads, the friction between the normal train wheels and the rails is too low and it just doesn't work. From Gornergrat you get an outstanding view of Matterhorn:

The peace and calmness at Gornergrat, along with the panoramic view of the Pennine alps and the Matterhorn, make this a mandatory visit.

For those thinking of doing a trip to Switzerland, I must tell you that this is one of the most spectacular trips I've done since I've been here in this country, the Glacier Express is certainly a mandatory visit for those coming here. Take a train from Zurich to Chur or to Zermatt (the train departs from both towns in the morning) and do this trip. If you are in Zermatt, be sure to take the Gornergrat train to Gornergrat and enjoy the view of the Matterhorn. If you do this, I'm sure you will be thanking me later!

Aquellos que me conocen bien saben que soy un apasionado de los vehículos de cuatro ruedas. Así que apenas pude, me dejé ir a la exposición de automóbiles de Ginebra. La exposición de automóviles de Ginebra (Salon de l'auto) es un evento que se realiza en Ginebra desde 1905. Es uno de los shows automovilísticos más importantes del mundo, y se puede decir que casi todos los modelos de autos más importantes de la historia se han introducido al mercado en este salón.

Puesto que en Suiza (y especialmente en Ginebra) no hacen falta los ricos y los super-ricos, en la exposición se exhiben las marcas y modelos más extravagantes y caros que se pueden comprar. Mercedes-Benz, Lamborghini, Ferrari, prototipos de diseñadores italianos como Zagato y Giugiaro, así como Rolls Royce, Bentley, Maseratti, hasta el Bugatti Vayron 16.4 de 1.4 millones de Euros está aquí en exhibición.

Practicamente todos los fabricantes de autos famosos en el mundo están en esta expo. Desde los japoneses de siempre (Toyota, Honda, Suzuki, etc), los malquebrados estadounidenses (Chrysler, GM, Ford), los europeos (VW, BMW, Mercedes), los carros de ultra-lujo, los super deportivos, y las casas diseñadoras italianas.

Para aquellos curiosos, el carro más caro de la expo es el Bugatti Veyron 16.4, con un motor de 16 cilindros, logra un poco más de 400km/h de velocidad, con un motor quadra-turbo de 1000 caballos de fuerza. Eso sí, en el primero hueco de las calles de Costa Rica que caigan, lo quiebran, porque el carro es muy bajo :-)

El evento es espectacular, y es un buen momento para que los fabricantes presenten en qué están trabajando y hacia dónde va el mundo del automóvil. Marcas como Toyota, Daihatsu, Mercedes, BMW y Honda presentan modelos cada vez más eficientes con diseños simplemente asombrosos.

El auto salon de Ginebra lo hacen siempre en marzo, así que si alguna vez planean un viaje a la región del oeste de Suiza, ya saben, si vienen en marzo, se pueden lucir con una visita al Salon de l'auto de Genève!

Those that know me well enough know that I am passionate about cars. So of course I didn't miss the chance to take the train and go to the Geneva Motor Show. The Geneva Motor Show (Salon de l'auto) is an event held since 1905. It is one of the world's most important auto shows, and you can say that the most important models in the history of the auto industry have been introduced here in Geneva.

Since here in Switzerland (and Geneva, specially), there is no lack of rich and super-rich, the most luxurious and expensive autos are also represented here. Mercedes-Benz, Lamborghini, Ferrari, prototypes of Italian designers like Zagato and Guigiaro, Rolls Royce, Bentley, Maseratti, even the 1.4 million euros Bugatti Veyron 16.4 are here.

@ 6:45min/h. Una corrida rápida para terminar la semana. Mañana debería hacer un hito de correr 10km en menos de una hora, pero me lo voy a saltar porque hoy me agarró un dolor extraño en la rodilla izquierda. La última vez que corrí 10km, hace como 2 meses, los hice en 59 minutos...



@6:45min/h. Just a quick run to finish the week. I should do a milestone tomorrow, that is, to run 10km in less than an hour. But I'm gonna skip that session, because today I got a very weird pain in the left knee, so I'll give it a rest. The last time I ran 10km, I managed a time of 59 minutes...

Bajo la nieve me tiré a correr hoy, pero ya no me importa que llueva o neve... 4km de calentamiento, y luego 3 x 1000m a 5:40min/km, con 4 minutos de descanso entre intérvalo, 1.5km para cerrar los 10km.



I ran today under snowy conditions, but I don't care anymore whether it's raining or snowing... 4km warm-up, then 3 x 1000m at 5:40min/km, 4 minutes of slow jogging between intervals, and then 1.5km to close up the 10k.

Long run, 22km

Los días que estuve en Letonia el clima estuvo miserable. Así que no salí a correr durante el fin de semana. Era pura lluvia/nieve/viento/lluvia/nieve/viento, etc. Como las carreras largas NO se pueden saltar, salí a correr hoy 22km en Zürich.

Ya me topé la primera piedra en el camino hacia la maratón. Al llegar a la casa, me di cuenta que tenía una uña del pie azul, y ya está empezando a doler. Lo curioso es que no sentí nada durante todo el camino. Probablemente voy a tener que saltarme unos días de entrenamiento...



Weather in Latvia was miserable during my stay there, and so I didn't run. Rain/snow/wind/rain/snow/wind, and so on for the whole weekend. Since the long runs MUST NEVER be skipped, I ran today 22km in Zürich.

And now I got my first obstacle towards the marathon. Once I got home, I discovered that one of my toenails what blue, and now it's starting to hurt. Curiously, I didn't feel anything during the run. Anyway, I might have to skip some days of training...

Riga
