Hoy decidí salir en bicicleta y darle la vuelta al lago Greifensee. La temperatura estaba en 0 grados, así que estaba perfecto para salir en bicicleta. Buen clima, aunque un poco nublado.

Schifahren Laterns

De nuevo me fui a esquiar pero esta vez a Laterns, en Austria, un pueblo en las montañas de Vorarlberg, cerca de 40 minutos en bus desde Rankweil. Laterns tiene pistas excelentes y muy entretenidas. Puesto que este día no había niebla, se tenía una impresionante y completamente despejada vista del valle.

Again I went skiing, but this time to Laterns, a small village on the Austrian alps, about 40 minutes away from Rankweil. Laterns has very nice lines to ski and snowboard. Since there was no fog, I was able to take a picture of the valley seen from the alps.

Puesto que no teníamos clases ayer jueves, Chris, Takeaki y yo nos fuimos a esquiar a Engelberg, uno de los resorts de esqui más grandes en Suiza central. El lugar es una formación rocosa impresionante, totalmente cubierta de nieve, hogar también del glaciar de Titlis.

Cabe destacar que, gracias al impulso de mis dos amigos, me deslicé por una de las pistas negras, las de mayor dificultad. Es un condenado guindo cubierto de nieve, y aún estoy sorprendido cómo no me estrellé, pero logré terminar la pista sin siquiera haberme caído!!!!

Aquí en Engelberg se encuentra el teleférico de Titlis, el primer teleférico giratorio del mundo, el cual sube a una altura de 3000 metros, desde donde se tiene una vista espectacular del valle y de los Alpes, los cuales parecen infinitos, aún desde esta altura.



Since we didn't have classes on Thursday, Chris, Takeaki and me went skiing to Engelberg, one of the biggest ski resorts in central Switzerland. The place is an impressive mountainous formation, totally covered with snow, and home of the Titlis glacier.

My two buddies convinced me to go along with them on one of the black tracks, the ones with the highest difficulty. It's almost a friggin' free-fall, and I am still amazed that I didn't crash and break something!!! It was really fun and I promise I am going to master those black lines in the future.

In Engelberg you find the Titlis Rotair cable car, supposedly the first rotating cable car in the world. Going to an altitude of 3000 meters, you find there a spectacular view of the valley and of the Swiss Alps, which even at this altitude, seem to be infinite.

For the World has Changed, and We Must Change With It

Una de las cualidades que tiene el nuevo presidente de los Estados Unidos, es que es un orador espectacular. La última persona que de verdad se ganó mi respeto absoluto por la forma en que se conduce a sí mismo y cómo llena las palabras de energía y significado, fue Tony Blair, antiguo primer ministro del Reino Unido. En esta oportunidad, quiero compartir con ustedes parte del discurso inaugural de Barack Obama.

Hoy terminó casi una década de intolerancia y aislamiento. Obama no es solamente una esperanza para el abatido pueblo estadounidense, sino para el resto del mundo también.



One of the greatest qualities of the new American president is that he is a spectacular speaker. The last person that I remember gained my respect and admiration because of the way he added power and meaning to his words was Tony Blair, the former prime minister of the United Kingdom. In this occassion, I'd like to share with you part of Obama's inauguration speech. Today, almost a decade of intolerance and alienation ended. Obama is not only hope for the embattled American people, but is also a sign of hope for the rest of the world as well.

Alus es quizás la palabra más importante en el idioma letonés. Significa cerveza! Y qué buena que es la cerveza en Letonia! Cuando vayan, pidan medio litro de Bauskas, no se van a arrepentir.

La verdad es que la experiencia en Letonia fue excelente. El grupo de estudiantes de MBA con quienes compartí estos cuatro días son excelentes personas, gentiles, y espero poder volver a mediados de Febrero para tomar ahí mi siguiente curso.

El viernes aproveché que tenía el día libre para ir a conocer la ciudad. Riga (escrito en letonés Rīga), la capital de Letonia, es una ciudad considerada patrimonio histórico de la humanidad por la UNESCO, y con toda la razón. Riga yace en la costa del mar báltico, y es servida por el río Daugava. Fue fundada por los primeros comerciantes alemanes en el siglo 12. Podrán imaginarse la cantidad de historia que tiene.

Desafortunadamente, Letonia fue ocupada por la Unión Soviética en 1944-45, forzando así al país en el régimen socialista que dominó toda Europa del Este hasta 1991. Sin embargo, el país, desde que recobró su independencia, no ha perdido para nada el tiempo. Desde hace años, sostuvo la tasa de crecimiento económico más alta de toda la Unión Europea (hasta que la crisis actual los llevó a la peor contracción de toda Europa!), y el nivel de occidentalización que tiene el país me pareció sorprendente!

Alus is the most important word in Latvian language. It means beer! And what wonderful beer you can get in Latvia. When you go there, ask for half a liter of Bauskas, I promise you won't regret it.

My trip to Latvia was simply excellent! The group of MBA students with whom I shared the last 4 days is wonderful, full of eager and gentle people, and I really expect to be able to travel again to Riga this February.

On Friday, I took the chance to go and see the city. Riga is the capital of Latvia, and is part of the UNESCO's World Historic Heritage List. Riga is located on the coast of the Baltic Sea, and is served by the Daugava river. Founded by the first German traders in the 12th century, it is clear that the city has tons of history to tell.

Unfortunately, Latvia was occupied by the Soviet Union in 1944-45, forcing the country into the socialist regimen that dominated eastern Europe until 1991. That year, Latvia regained its independence, and the Latvians have lost no time at all. It was impressive for me to see how much occidentalized the country is. Latvia sustained for many years the highest economic growth index in the whole European Union (until the current financial crisis sent it to the greatest economic downturn inside the economic bloc), and I was truly impressed by what this people have achieved in such a short time.

El vuelo fue absolutamente punctual, llegó a las 12.30 horas al aeropuerto de
Riga (RIX), la capital de Letonia. La primera impresión que me llevé fue el idioma: desde hace mucho que no venía a un país donde no entiendo ni papa. En Letonia hablan letón, un idioma de una familia de idioma bálticos, de la cual solamente sobreviven el letón y el lituano. Sin embargo, la gente joven usualmente habla un nivel decente de inglés, así que no hay problema.

Letonia me recibió con un clima agradable (0 grados centígrados) y completamente nublado, con lluvia ligera.
La clase de la maestría está compuesta de 29 estudiantes, todos nacionales, sin embargo, no me pregunten el nombre de mis compañeros porque si apenas puedo pronunciarlos, ni sueñen que me acuerdo como escribirlos!

The flight was absolutely punctual. It arrived at Riga airport (RIX) at 12.30. My first impression was the language: since a long time ago I was in a country where I could not understand a single frigging word! Latvians speak Latvian, a language part of a Baltic family of languages, of which only Latvian and Lithuanian have survived. However, young people speak a good level of English, so no problem so far.

Latvia received me with a good temperature (0 degrees), totally cloudy and with a slight rain.

The masters class is composed of 29 students, all locals, however, don’t ask me the names of my new Latvian colleagues; I can barely pronounce some of their names, and I still don’t know even how to write them!

Seguramente porque las finanzas son tan impopulares en estos días, parece que solamente yo me matriculé en mi universidad para hacer la especialización en banca y finanzas. Mi universidad tiene un convenio con una escuela de negocios en Riga, Letonia, en donde los profesores de Suiza dan clases varias veces al año a estudiantes de MBA en Riga, la capital de Letonia. Así que la universidad decidió mandarme para allá, junto con el Dr. Ider, a tomar las clases finanzas! La U paga todo, claro está.

Mañana me voy para Riga, en el vuelo de AirBaltic, y estaré ahí hasta el domingo en la noche. Estén atentos al blog...

Surely since finance is so unpopular these days, it happens to be that I'm the only student who is doing the specialization in finance and banking at my business school. Since my school has a partnership with a business school in Riga, Latvia, in which our teachers often give classes to Latvian MBA students, the school decided to send me, under their expense, to Riga, where I'll take the finance class of Dr. Ider.

Those who know me know that I love to travel, meet new people and new countries, so I'm really looking forward to this opportunity! I'm flying tomorrow on the AirBaltic flight to Riga, and will be there until Sunday afternoon. So stay tuned to this blog...

No vayan a creer que en todo este tiempo me he dedicado a vaguear. Lo que pasa es que no había tomado más fotos, porque como en invierno amanece hasta las 8 de la mañana, no quedan muy bien. Pero hoy salí en bicicleta durante el día, y tomé está foto cerca de Oberglatt.

Día de ir a esquiar

No hay nada como pegarse una buena esquiada. Y no hay nada como caerse en la nieve y dar mil vueltas hasta detenerse. O mejor aún, darse cuenta que, después de la cromada, el pantalón tiene un hueco justo en la entrepierna!

Para terminar el año 2008, un año interesantísimo porque pasó de todo (mi mudanza aquí en Suiza, mi salida de mi empresa GPI, el descalabro de la industria financiera y después del resto de la economía), pasamos la noche de año nuevo en Bizau, donde nevó toda la noche y la madrugada del 1 de enero.

Bizau, es un pueblo en la región de Bregenzerwald en Vorarlberg, Austria. Se caracteriza por sus impresionantes montañas, y en invierno, se pueden practicar deportes de la temporada en resorts de ski de excelente calidad.

Lo más importante en este caso, es que mi mama aprendió a deslizarse en trineo. Así como lo oyen, ya se manda cuesta abajo en trineos de madera, cuyo único control de frenado y dirección son los pies sobre la nieve!!! Si no me creen, vean el video:

Como usual, la noche buena la pasamos en la casa de Andrea, en Rankweil, Austria, lugar del que pronto pondré fotos. Una fabulosa cena de salchichas blancas al estilo de Baviera, las típicas canciones navideñas de Austria, y al final, los regalos!!!

La ciudad de Innsbruck, como siempre, fascinante. La última vez que mi mama anduvo por aquí fue en el verano del 2006, cuando vinimos a Europa como parte del tour del mundial Alemania 2006.

Rankweil - Frutz

Corrida de hoy en la mañana, que salí con mi mama a correr en Rankweil, Austria. Esta fue su última corrida en Austria antes de regresarse a Costa Rica.

Nos fuimos a un pueblo en la región de Bregenzerwald en Vorarlberg, Austria, que se llama Bizau. Ahí, desgraciadamente, no tenía ni señal de celular, ni tampoco Internet por los últimos 5 días. Pero, aún un poco tarde, no importa, les deseo a todos un excelente año nuevo y muchos éxitos.



We went to a town called Bizau, on the Bregenzerwald region in Vorarlberg, Austria, a region recognized for its impressive ski resorts and mountains. Regrettably, I had no cell phone connection and no Internet, but still, even a bit late, I wish each a everyone of you and a happy new 2009 and huge successes during this new year.
